Anti-Static vs Conductive vs Dissipative Plastics: What’s the Difference?
Surface Resistance Spectrum
Category | Surface Resistance (Ω) | Charge Behavior |
Insulative | > 10¹¹ | Charges accumulate, no dissipation |
Antistatic | 10⁹ – 10¹¹ | Slow charge dissipation |
Dissipative (ESD) | 10⁴ – 10⁹ | Controlled, safe dissipation |
Conductive | 10⁰ – 10⁴ | Rapid charge removal |
Detailed Explanations
Insulative (> 10¹¹ Ω)
Standard PEEK, POM, PEI, PA66, PTFE in natural state. Charges accumulate to 10,000+ volts. Not suitable for ESD environments.
Antistatic (10⁹ – 10¹¹ Ω)
Topical treatments or IDP blends. Prevents charge buildup but dissipates slowly. Often humidity-dependent and temporary.
Dissipative/ESD (10⁴ – 10⁹ Ω)
Carbon-filled permanent ESD materials like ESD POM and ESD PEEK. Controlled dissipation in milliseconds. Not humidity-dependent. Standard for semiconductor manufacturing (ideal: 10⁶-10⁸ Ω).
Conductive (10⁰ – 10⁴ Ω)
High carbon/metal filler loading. Rapid charge removal. For EMI shielding, ATEX environments, fuel systems.
Material Options
Material | Insulative | Dissipative (ESD) | Conductive |
PEEK | Natural | ESD PEEK | PEEK CF30 |
POM | Natural | ESD POM | High carbon POM |
PEI | Natural | ESD PEI | — |
PA66 | Natural | ESD PA66 | Carbon PA66 |
Selection Guide
· Semiconductor: Dissipative (10⁶-10⁸ Ω) — see ESD material selection
· Electronic assembly: Dissipative per IEC 61340-5-1
· Packaging: Antistatic or dissipative
· Explosive environments: Conductive or dissipative
· EMI shielding: Conductive (PEEK CF30)
FAQ
Q1: Anti-static vs ESD dissipative?
Antistatic (10⁹-10¹¹ Ω): slow, may be temporary. ESD dissipative (10⁴-10⁹ Ω): controlled, permanent, milliseconds.
Q2: Best for semiconductor?
Dissipative: 10⁶-10⁸ ohms — prevents both accumulation and rapid discharge.
Q3: Are ESD properties permanent?
Carbon-filled ESD plastics: yes. Topical treatments: temporary.
