Surface Preparation Methods

· Abrasion — raises surface area and removes contamination; always follow with a clean wipe

· Plasma treatment — adds polar groups, ideal for PEEK, PA, and POM; consistent and clean

· Flame treatment — fast, effective for polyolefins on conveyor-type lines

· Chemical etch — sodium-naphthalene for PTFE, chromic acid for POM and PE

· Corona discharge — well suited to films and thin sections

Whichever method is used, the treatment must be performed immediately before bonding: treated surfaces revert to low surface energy within hours when exposed to air, and until then they are also vulnerable to contamination from fingerprints and shop dust.

Adhesive Selection

For rigid plastic-to-plastic joints, two-part epoxies give the highest strength and the widest compatibility, especially with flexible grades that accommodate differential thermal expansion. Polyurethane adhesives add flexibility for joints that will see impact or thermal cycling. Cyanoacrylates set in seconds and suit small assemblies, but they are brittle and moisture sensitive in the long term. Silicones provide sealing rather than structural strength and remain the practical choice where flexibility matters most. For high-temperature service, choose an epoxy rated above the maximum operating temperature of the assembly, with margin.

Joint Design Basics

· Design for shear and compression rather than peel — adhesives are weakest in peel

· Overlap the joint to spread stress; increasing overlap beats increasing thickness

· Roughen bonded surfaces to 1–3 µm profile for mechanical keying

· Allow for differences in thermal expansion between the two materials

· Clamp during cure to keep bond-line thickness uniform and thin

In practice, the joint that fails is rarely the one with the weakest adhesive. It is the one where the surface was prepared hours earlier and left exposed to the air, or handled with bare fingers before bonding. Treat surface preparation as a controlled process step with its own specification and inspection criteria rather than as a convenience before assembly, and joint strength becomes repeatable instead of a matter of luck.

FAQ

Q1: Can PTFE be glued?

Not without treatment. The standard method is sodium-naphthalene chemical etching, which changes the surface chemistry enough for structural adhesives to bond. Untreated PTFE will not hold a bond.

Q2: What is the best adhesive for PEEK?

A two-part epoxy on a plasma-treated surface gives the best results. Untreated PEEK bonds poorly, typically achieving a fraction of the strength of a treated joint.

Q3: How long does plasma treatment last?

Treated surfaces should be bonded within hours — surface energy decays as the surface re-adsorbs contaminants from the air.

Q4: Which plastics bond without any surface preparation?

PC, PMMA, and ABS bond readily after only a light abrasion and solvent wipe, thanks to their naturally higher surface energy.

Q5: Should I weld or bond?

Weld where a monolithic, chemical-resistant joint is needed and geometry allows. Bond where you need to join dissimilar materials, seal a joint, or avoid a heat-affected zone.
