ESD PEI Material Properties and Applications: Ultem Anti-Static Solutions for Aerospace and Electronics
Comprehensive guide to ESD-safe PEI (Polyetherimide) materials. Covers Ultem properties, ESD formulation, aerospace and electronics applications, and comparison with standard PEI grades.
Introduction
PEI (Polyetherimide), commonly known by the brand name Ultem, is a high-performance amorphous thermoplastic with excellent thermal, mechanical, and flame-resistant properties. ESD-safe PEI extends these properties to static-sensitive applications.
PEI (Polyetherimide) Material Fundamentals
Standard PEI offers: (1) High continuous service temperature (170°C); (2) Inherent flame resistance (UL94 V-0); (3) Excellent dimensional stability; (4) Transparency in natural grade; (5) Good chemical resistance to hydrocarbons and alcohols.
ESD PEI Formulation and Surface Resistance
ESD PEI is formulated with conductive additives to achieve surface resistance of 10^6-10^8 ohms per ANSI/ESD S4.1-2006. NAGOMER ESD PEI (grade I6B) maintains the excellent mechanical and thermal properties of standard PEI while adding ESD protection.
Aerospace Applications: Interior and System Components
PEI is widely used in aircraft interior components (overhead bins, seat parts, monument structures) due to its FAR 25.853 compliance and low smoke/toxicity. ESD PEI is used in avionics enclosures and electronic bay components where static control is required.
Electronics and Semiconductor Applications
In semiconductor and electronics manufacturing, ESD PEI is used for test sockets, burn-in sockets, and component carriers. Its dimensional stability at elevated temperatures makes it ideal for reflow-compatible component carriers.
Processing and Machining ESD PEI
ESD PEI machines similarly to standard PEI. Carbide tooling, moderate cutting speeds, and adequate cooling are recommended. NAGOMER supplies ESD PEI in sheets and rods with standard thicknesses from 1mm to 50mm.
Conclusion
ESD PEI combines the best properties of high-performance thermoplastics with ESD protection. For applications requiring flame resistance, high temperature capability, and static control, ESD PEI is often the only material that meets all requirements.
